The stress, anxiety and worry of having a loved one who has an unhealthy relationship with Alcohol, drugs, or addictive behaviour can have physical, emotional, social, and spiritual consequence.

Family members who are affected by the impact of someone else’s addictive behaviour often feel confused, frustrated, angry, helpless and completely exhausted.

The RISE family programme helps to reduce anxiety, stress and confusion for the family members. It promotes healing by identifying how addictive behaviour can impact the family and what family members can do to take care of themselves.

Family member’s learn that they can't control a loved one’s addictive behaviour, they didn't cause it, and they can't cure it.

By becoming aware of the beliefs and experiences that shape their own behaviours, participants identify new, healthy ways of coping with addiction and relationships.

10-Week Family Programmes

Our 10-week non-residential Family Programme has been developed to create awareness and educate families with loved ones in addiction.

This therapeutic programme is run one evening per week, for 3 hours per session. Each programme is attended by up to 12 participants and is facilitated by 2 qualified and experienced RISE addiction counsellors. The format is a combination of lectures and group therapy.

We ask for a donation of €30 per night if you can afford it. Please don't worry if you feel you are unable to pay this amount as we can come to some arrangement, it is vital not to let this stand in the way of the support needed. We are a charitable organisation with no government funding, so this donation contributes to the overall cost of the Family Programme.

It is our vision to significantly expand the number of non-residential Family Programmes and roll them out throughout the island of Ireland. We plan to deliver this vision over the next five years.

Group Therapy

Our Family Programmes are based around a group therapy approach. Each group comprises up to 10 people and two RISE counsellors, who engage in group interaction and discussion for personal growth and development. The group aims to assist one another to become aware of behaviours that need to change.  Group members develop interpersonal skills, learning and healing.

One major outcome of group therapy is the instillation of hope in oneself and others for change, thus increasing one’s self esteem and self-worth.

Residential Family Programme

(Unfortunately this programme is suspended at the moment due to lack of funding)

Our 5-day Residential Family Programme has also been developed to create awareness and educate families with loved ones in addiction.

This therapeutic programme currently takes place in the Manor House on beautiful Rathlin Island Co. Antrim. The island is a haven of peace and tranquillity and its geographical location attracts people from all communities.

The residential programme runs from Sunday to Friday, several times a year. Each programme is attended by up to 12 participants and is facilitated by 2 qualified and experienced RISE addiction counsellors. The format, though similar to the non-residential programme with a combination of lectures and group therapy, is more concentrated and intensive.

Have a read of this personal testimonial from a family member to get an idea of the Rathlin residential programme and its impact on their own recovery.
